Political Cartoon
Before Mary Tudor became Queen Mary I of England, her relationship with her sister, Elizabeth Tudor, was just as similar to any other sisterly relationship during their time. Unfortunately, both girls had very different religious backgrounds which led Queen Mary to imprison her own sister for treason at the age of twenty-one. Queen Mary wished to eliminate the Protestant faith even before she had gained the throne and such hatred grew into sentencing hundreds of Protestants to a burning death. The Wyatt Rebellion of 1554 consisted of noblemen within the Queens court and was constructed to overthrow the Queen which was proposed to marry Philip of Spain. The rebellion failed immediately because it lack and overall support from the people within England but left Elizabeth Tudor as a conspired leader. Queen Mary did not grant her a court trial or even proof of Elizabeth's involvement. Princess Elizabeth was sentenced to imprisonment in the Bell Tower and shortly after released to house arrest until Queen Mary's death five years later.
